Orthognathic Surgery

Orthognathic surgery is a treatment method to improve both functionality and aesthetics in patients with jaw bone irregularities. The orthodontist and the maxillofacial surgeon collaborate for the best possible outcome for the patient. The surgical procedure allows improvements on the facial skeletal structures in cases where the jaw closures are incompatible with each other. Either upper or lower jaw or both might be responsible for the deformity. In most cases, the orthodontist places orthodontic braces braces on patients’ teeth before surgery and they stay in position for 12-18 months . Then, during the surgical phase, the facial bony structures are cut, separated and reunited to achieve the preoperative surgical plan.

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and may require several days of hospital stay. The procedures are all carried out intraorally, so the patients do not suffer from facial scar formation.
